Orange Cranberry Sangria
Cranberry Sangria is a festive cocktail which is a combination of the ultimate fall berry with citrus flavors, spices, and wine.
This homemade drink takes inspiration from the original drink popular in Spain and Portugal. Though alcoholic, this beverage is fruity with a hint of spice that makes this perfect for the cold weather.
With this easy recipe, you will no longer need to spend on expensive wine and liquor. Entertain your guests with this flavorful and colorful beverage that will leave your guests asking for more!
All you need to do is follow this recipe and prepare a huge batch because this will surely be a hit at your party!
What is Sangria?
This drink is bloody red, which is a mixture of red wine and fruits. No wonder that the Spanish sangria comes from the term that means blood.
History has it that it was the Roman conquerors who cultivated red grapes in Spain. It is from the growth of the vineyards that wineries started. And it is from the red wine these vineyards produced that sangria was born.
It is usually a summer concoction. But we formulated this recipe for the autumn and winter using the flavors of those seasons.
What are the best red wines for Sangria?
There is no single “best” wine for this party favorite. Each kind has its distinct flavor. And we recommend the kind of wine depending on the main fruit ingredient.
For example, in this recipe, we are using the cranberry. Hence, the Cabernet Sauvignon which has a fruity taste complements with berries the best.
Garnacha, Zinfandel, and Tempranillo are popular choices, too. Generally speaking, choose a wine that you will enjoy by itself even if you will not use it in this recipe.
And note that this kind of beverage flourished in Spain, so anything made in the region must be fantastic but could be more expensive.
How do you make Cranberry Sangria?
- Mix: In a large pitcher or container, mix the ingredients except for the orange soda.
- Chill: Let the mixture cool for at least two hours.
- Serve: Stir in the orange soda and ice right before serving.
Can you use frozen cranberries to make Cranberry Sangria?
Yes, you can. Simply thaw them before using in this recipe.
Can you make Cranberry Sangria in advance?
Yes! The longer the concoction sits in the fridge, the better! This will allow all the flavors from the fruits and spices to be infused in the drink.
Since you will need to chill this, then, you can prepare it a day before or so.
How to Store:
Simply cover it nice and tight in the fridge and cool for as fast as 2 hours or as long as 24 hours.
How to Serve:
In the glass of your choice, pour the sangria to about 3/4 of the volume. Then, add a bit of the soda and stir. And don’t forget to put ice!
Recipe Tips:
- If you want something milder than Cabernet Sauvignon, then, you can use pinot noir.
- You can garnish with citrus slices and fresh cranberries for a good visual presentation. You can also add some bits of apples!
- You can also try our recipe for the cranberry mocktail if you have leftover berries.

Can it be made without the rum? The only alcohol my husband can drink is red wine. And would you replace the rum with something else i.e. more wine or more juice etc?
Catalina Castravet
hi, yes totally, just skip it alltogether or add more wine!
