Bacon Wrapped Smokies

Bacon Wrapped Smokies are guaranteed to be the king of appetizers. They are delicious, coated in an amazing brown sugar and cayenne pepper glaze, and wrapped in bacon. The cayenne pepper really brings this glaze to another level. It gives the smokies a spicier kick, but balances well when combined with the brown sugar.

This amazing topping caramelizes in the oven, and gives each smokie a sticky, sweet flavor, with a little spicy heat to it. Also, the bacon not only gives them a nice presentation, but it gives them a crispy and smoky flavor, which everyone loves.

Whether you make them as a regular snack, or to host a football game, this festive appetizer is guaranteed to be a huge hit. They require only 6 ingredients, and just 30 minutes to make!

What do you need to make Bacon Wrapped Smokies?

  • 1 lb. mini smokies or mini hot dogs, patted dry
  • 1 lb. bacon, each slice cut into 3″ strips
  • 1/3 cup maple syrup
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper

How to make Bacon Wrapped Smokies:

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F and line a medium baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Next, shorten the bacon strips, by cutting them evenly in 3 pieces. Then, wrap the bacon around the smokies, and place on the prepared baking sheet seam side down.
  3. In a medium bowl, combine maple syrup with brown sugar, smoked paprika and cayenne pepper. Brush onto the bacon wrapped smokies and bake for about 20 minutes, or until bacon is crisp.

Can you make little smokies wrapped in crescent rolls?

Yes. To make little smokies wrapped in crescent rolls, you will follow basically the same steps:

  1. Heat oven to 400°F. Unroll the dough and cut the crescent rolls into narrow triangle.
  2. Next, place the smokies on shortest side of each triangle and roll over.
  3. Bake for about 12 to 15 minutes, or until golden brown.

Can bacon wrapped smokies be made ahead?

Yes. This appetizer is a great candidate to make ahead of time. Simply do all the steps prior to baking, and refrigerate in a container up to 3 days. When time for cooking comes, preheat the oven, and bake them for 30 minutes.

Can bacon wrapped smokies be frozen?

Yes. The smokies can easily be frozen. You can freeze them before or after cooking them. In either case, to prevent them from sticking, it would be best to wrap each one tightly in a plastic wrap, or arrange in layers in a container with parchment paper in between. Once wrapped, freeze for up to 3 months.

How to reheat bacon wrapped smokies:

  • To cook unbaked smokies, put them in a baking tray and bake for 35-40 minutes. Please note, the cooking time is a bit longer due to the fact that the smokies are frozen.
  • If you are reheating already cooked smokies, simply put them in the oven for 10-15 minutes at 350 degrees F. Also, you can microwave them for few minutes before they are fully heated through.
