Easy BLT Salad with Croutons Recipe

This BLT Salad is one of my ALL TIME Favorite dishes. Firstly, it is super easy to make, and ready in minutes. Secondly, it is so rich and flavorful, that it can be enjoyed as a full meal on its own.

The fresh ingredients combined with crispy bacon and croutons make for the perfect flavor combination. Also, the creamy blue cheese dressing on top just brings all the flavors together.

I like to serve it for lunch or dinner as a main dish or side dish. It is a nice complement to pretty much any meal, and also it is quite low in carbs. So, feel free to enjoy it as a main meal or as a side dish.

BLT salad ingredients

Homemade BLT Salad Ingredients:

For this recipe, you will need the following ingredients:

For the salad:

  • Lettuce – I like using chopped iceberg lettuce, as it works best here. However, you can use Romaine, Nappa Cabbage, etc.
  • Fresh tomatoes – Again, you can use your favorite variety. I tend to go with cherry or Roma tomatoes. They are smaller in size and are sweeter and more flavorful.
  • Bacon – Who doesn’t love bacon?! This is the perfect ingredient when it comes to this dish. It adds that crunchiness to it.
  • Boiled eggs – For some protein intake.
  • Croutons – Another crunchy ingredient that just works nicely here. You can use any type of croutons you prefer.
  • Green onions – Use fresh chopped green onions.
  • Blue Cheese – If you are not a blue cheese fan, feel free to go with cheddar or other types.

For the dressing:

Sour cream, mayonnaise, blue cheese, buttermilk, lemon juice, onion powder, garlic powder, sugar, salt, and black pepper.

How to make the best BLT Salad?

Once you have the ingredients, the rest is pretty simple.

  1. Cook the bacon: Start by cooking the bacon according to the package instruction. I recommend cooking the bacon at home, instead of buying a pre-cooked one. This way you can make it extra crispy. However, if you are short on time, then go with the store-bought one.
  2. Cut the ingredients: Using a sharp knife, cut the tomatoes, lettuce into bite pieces.
  3. Make the dressing: In a bowl, combine the dressing ingredients. Then, whisk them together until smooth.
  4. Assemble the salad: Combine all the ingredients in a large bowl. Then, drizzle with the dressing on top. Toss gently to combine.
  5. Serve: Enjoy it right away.

BLT Salad Variations and Substitutions:

  • Add more proteins: Add some shredded chicken, shrimp, baked chicken breast, ham, or turkey for more proteins.
  • Veggies: Feel free to add more veggies to it. Some great addition would be avocado, sprouts, bell pepper, corn, etc.
  • Swap the cheese: Not a fan of blue cheese? Then, use your favorite type. Cheddar, mozzarella, Feta cheese would work just as well.
  • Make it healthier: To make it healthier, reduce the bacon intake. Also, instead of the creamy blue cheese dressing, use extra virgin olive oil.

Can you make BLT salad in advance?

Although I tend to make it fresh, because it is so quick and easy, you can also make it in advance. Just assemble the salad the night before. Do not add the dressing. Store in the fridge, and drizzle the dressing the following day, just prior to serving.

What to serve with BLT salad?

This is a full and hearty meal on its own. However, it is also great as a side dish. It goes well for dinner with:

Recipe Tips:

  • I recommend baking the bacon on a lined foil baking sheet for about 15 minutes at 425 degrees F. You can adjust the time if the bacon is thinner or thicker cut.
  • Also, this recipe can easily be doubled or tripled if you are holding a larger gathering.
  • The salad dressing can be made in advance for up to 3 days. Simply use a mason jar, or an airtight container and refrigerate it.
  • For a healthier take, swap the regular bacon with turkey bacon.
